How to double-sleeve cards: orientation, air and box fit
For a conventional top-opening inner sleeve, put its opening at the bottom of the card. Insert that assembly bottom-first into an outer sleeve that opens at the top. The openings end up at opposite ends. This adds coverage; it does not make the card waterproof or eliminate trapped air.
Sleeve one card first
- Choose an inner and an outer made for the same card size. Test the pair on an inexpensive card before sleeving a deck.
- Slide the inner over the card from its top edge. Its opening should finish below the card's bottom edge.
- Keep the card upright and insert it bottom-first into the outer sleeve. The inner's open end enters first; its sealed end remains near the outer's opening.
- Guide the layers together gently. If the inner slides off or a corner catches, back out and realign it rather than pushing harder.
- Ease out excess air with gentle, even pressure. Stop if the card bends. Check that both layers sit flat before adding the card to a stack.
This orientation follows Dragon Shield's double-sleeving instructions. Side-loading and sealable inners have different closures; follow the instructions for that product.
Check the box after adding a second sleeve
A second layer increases stack thickness even when you remove excess air. A box labeled “100+” may use a particular sleeve brand or configuration for its capacity claim. A lid that will not close is a reason to check the dimensions, not to compress the cards harder.
Check 100 cards in Dragon Shield Matte and KMC Perfect Fit sleeves. Change the box, sleeves or count to match your deck.
The checker distinguishes published fit reports from estimates. Read the fit methodology to understand its air allowance and why a report for one sleeve pair cannot establish another pair's fit.
Choose the correct size
Magic, Pokémon, Lorcana and One Piece normally use standard-size sleeves. Yu-Gi-Oh! uses Japanese-size sleeves. Specialty cards can differ. Use the sleeve size reference and verify the product's stated card size before choosing both layers.
Quick answers
Should both sleeve openings face the same way? For conventional top-opening inners, use opposite ends as described above. Follow the manufacturer's method for other closure types.
Does double-sleeving remove trapped air? No. Air can remain between layers. Gentle settling can reduce it, but the extra sleeve itself still takes up space.
Why does my deck no longer fit its box? Added sleeve material, air and the box's capacity assumptions can all contribute. Check the exact setup and use a roomier box when necessary.
